10 Steps to Deep Cleaning the Bathroom

Keeping your bathroom clean is important, and when you do the task on a weekly basis, deep cleaning it will be even easier. Wiping down surfaces after each use will help immensely when the time come to do the deep cleaning. Even when you clean your bathroom regularly, moisture can be a favorite breeding ground of germs meaning there are areas in your bathroom that will require periodic deep cleaning. Using these tips, you’ll have your bathroom clean and shining in record time.

Steps for Deep Cleaning Your Bathroom

As you begin, open a window as you clean or turn on the bathroom exhaust fan to freshen up the air in your bathroom and prevent any cleaner fumes from building up. Remember, as with all cleaning projects, to clean from top to bottom, allowing any dust or debris to fall down so you can clean it as you go.

  1. Remove all the items on counters and shelves, so that you can clean more quickly and effectively.
  2. Starting at the top, wipe your light fixtures with a soft, clean cloth (microfiber is best).
  3. Next, wipe down your window sills/tracks. A blend of water and vinegar makes easy work of this task, but if you haven’t cleaned these areas in a while, you may need a small scrub brush to get corners clean. Once the sills and tracks are clean, clean your windows.
  4. Now, clean your mirrors with your favorite streak free cleaner and cloth.
  5. Dust shelves and countertops before cleaning with your chosen cleaner and soft, clean cloth. (You’ll also want to dust and wipe all those items you removed from shelves and counters before putting them back in place.)
  6. The shower and bathtub come next. Clean with disinfecting bathroom cleaner, using a cloth or a scrubber if needed to get the job done. When the area is cleaned to your satisfaction, rinse all the surfaces well and wipe them dry with a clean cloth. Don’t forget to clean the shower ledges where you probably keep shampoo, conditioner, and soap. This is also the day to check your loofah. If it is looking worn, it’s time to replace your trusted loofah.
  7. On deep cleaning day, you’ll want to wash window and shower curtains as needed along with the bathmat.
  8. Next, clean your toilet. Be sure to use a disinfecting cleaner here – on the back, under the lid, the toilet seat, around the toilet, and on the floor. The vinegar water solution is a great option if you don’t have a cleaner you love. Once the cleaning is complete, rinse/wipe, and dry the area.
  9. The floors and baseboards are next up. Use your bathroom cleaner and a soft cloth to wipe the baseboards. Next, sweep or vacuum the floor and then mop with your chosen floor cleaner.
  10. Last, but not least, clean the sink. Saving the sink until last allows you to use it for rinsing your cloths as you clean. Clean you sink with care using your disinfecting cleaner. This is a great time to clean your sink drain as well to remove buildup and germs. While you’re here at the sink, you’ll also want to toss your toothbrush holder into the dishwasher for cleaning or clean it thoroughly with antibacterial, disinfecting cleaner.
