Take Another Look! The Things Your Forgot to Clean

So, you’ve just finished cleaning your house and you look around the room with pride. Everything looks great, but is everything really clean? Before you get mad and stop reading, think about it. Everybody misses a spot now and then. And on top of that, everyone has forgotten areas that, well, get overlooked during weekly cleaning. The good news is all those things you forgot to clean can be cleaned quickly and easily. Here are a few of the commonly forgotten items and areas and the fast and simple way to keep them as clean as the rest of the house!

Door Knobs and Light Switches

Though everyone in the house touches the door knobs and light fixtures on a daily basis, they are often overlooked even as you clean the rooms where they are located. And honestly, now that you are thinking about it, you realize because hands carry germs, those same hands leave dirt, grime, germs on door knobs and light switches. Never fear, cleaning them is as simple a wiping them down with a water/vinegar solution or your favorite antibacterial cleaner. By adding this simple step to your cleaning routine, you’ll keep not only dirt and grime away, but also bacteria and other germs.

Electronic Devices

Everyone has them, handheld and personal electronics, which are used frequently without giving a thought to the cleanliness of your hands or your devices. Touch screen devices like phones, tablets, and computers get easily covered with germs, grime, and gunk. Cleaning them is easy, though you want to take care and not damage them by using a solution of isopropyl alcohol and distilled water, which evaporates quickly to keep things dry and operating properly. While you’re at it, you might want to wipe down all those television remotes as well.

Home Gym Equipment

Having gym equipment at home is very convenient whether you have only a yoga mat and some handheld dumbbells or an elliptical or full-blown home gym setup. Of course, that equipment collects sweat, hair, skin cells, lotion, and germs as you complete your daily workout. Gym equipment can be easily cleaned and wiped down with a solution of water and distilled vinegar (equal parts), while yoga mats and weights can benefit from a cleaning of a combination of water and a few drops of dish detergent. If you feel yours may need a deeper cleaning, check your product’s manufacturer recommendations before proceeding.

Ceiling Fans and Light Fixtures

Akin to door knobs and light switches, ceiling fans and light fixtures are often overlooked and miss the cleaning they need. Since they are overhead, and typically your only interaction with them is when you turn them on and off, its easy to see how they get overlooked. Of course, everyone knows light fixtures and fans (even though they are in motion) collect dust and grime. Before you begin cleaning either of these, be sure it is turned off, and in the case of lights, that they are completely cool. Keeping ceiling fan blades dusted will help. If yours are particularly dirty, use a damp cloth to wipe clean. Light fixtures can be cleaned with a vinegar/water solution applied to a microfiber cloth and then wiped gently. Follow with a dry cloth to remove any streaks or remaining dust.
