Why is Fall Cleaning Important?

Fall Cleaning” needs to be completed annually, like its cousin “Spring Cleaning” to ensure you home stays its most fresh and clean. Plus, in the fall, a number of holidays are approaching which means guests, along with parties and other holiday events. The fall and upcoming winter season can also mean extra time inside, depending on your location and weather patterns in your area. Either way, getting your home clean means you are well prepared for the seasons ahead and breathing easy because you’ve cleared away clutter, pet hair, dust, and debris that has gathered all summer long. Giving your home a deep cleaning in the fall also makes for less preparation when the holidays arrive along with family and friends who visit. To get your fall cleaning started, the Signature Maids have prepared this handy checklist. And, of course, should you need their assistance to get the job done, the Signature Maids are ready to help!

Decluttering for Fall

Begin your fall cleaning by decluttering your home. During summer, with the kids home from school, clutter tends to accumulate more than any other time of the year. Start in the kitchen and bathrooms, cleaning out cabinets and getting rid of unnecessary accumulation – from expired products to worn out towels. While emptying the cabinets, it’s the perfect time to wipe down the interior and reorganize all that remains. Next, head to the bedrooms and take on the clutter in closets and dressers removing worn clothing, as well as items that no longer fit, and yes, all those pieces you haven’t worn in over a year! You might even be able to get the kids to part with toys they no longer play with or have outgrown. Finally, declutter the common areas where papers, magazines, and mail often accumulate.

Cleaning the Windows

You may be thinking, window cleaning is a job best done in spring, think again. Fall and winter’s shorter days mean a greater need for natural light, which can only reach inside your home if your windows are clean. Use your favorite glass cleaner, inside and out, along with a microfiber cloth to prevent streaking. While still at the windows, now is time to clean your blinds and window treatments. Vinyl and other washable blinds and shades can be taken down for cleaning with soap and water, while canvas, cotton, or fabric blinds and shades should be vacuumed with a brush attachment. Window treatments should be cleaned according to manufacturer directions which may mean dusting, vacuuming, washing, or dry cleaning.

Semi-Annual Deep Cleaning for Fall

Like in spring, fall is the time clean your ceiling light fixtures and rid the ceiling of any cobwebs or smudges. Next, clean the walls. Begin the process by dusting the walls and follow up by washing and rinsing small areas at a time to avoid streaking. Finally dry the walls with a soft microfiber cloth. Next, vacuum carpeting thoroughly along with upholstered furnishings. If deep cleaning is needed, you can take on the task in D-I-Y fashion or call on the professionals at Signature Maids to get the job done for you. Also take a look at your hard surface flooring. If it is in need of deep cleaning or even refinishing, fall is the ideal time to get the job done.

While you’re deep cleaning, now is the time to clean in, around, and beneath your appliances, and dust off the refrigerator’s condenser coils. If you have a woodburning fireplace and love a cozy fire on cooler fall and winter nights, this is the time to have your chimney inspected and cleaned. Next up, though technically not cleaning, fall is the time to replace your furnace filters and check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

And now you know why “Fall Cleaning” is just as important as “Spring Cleaning” as well as the fact that Signature Maids is always ready to get your house clean and ready any time of year!
